Golfs Great Competitors - Compared by Groups

As I watched Tiger Woods triumph yet again for his 14th Major, I came away thinking about his competition or shall I say the lack of? It's a shame that Tiger does not have a better crop of players to really test him. You think that he does have some competition, I am going to show you that all of todays players do not compare to what Jack Nicklaus or Ben Hogan had to face. First, I will say without equal Tiger is tons better today than anyone, however, can we say if the competition was better, it would definitely have an effect on his game and he would not have won as many majors? That is in the mind of interpretation, however I will point out the biggest difference between who a player has had to compete against and you can then draw your own conclusions.

The easiest way to break my little test down was by eras. How many majors were won by players in a particular era and who that era showed to be the top player. This will help to see who the top player had to beat. Bobby Jones won 7 majors from 1923 to 1930. I always will believe if Jones did not hang up his spikes, he would have set records far ahead of Jack Nicklaus. My reasoning is, Jones was only 28 years old when retiring. He was just hitting his age peak. Nicklaus would go on to win 19 majors in a 25 year span, what would Jones have been able to do with another 17 years?

In Jones Era, there was Harry Vardon who won 7 majors. Gene Sarazen won 7 and Walter Hagen won 11 majors. Taking Bobby Jones top 3 toughest players, we see a total of 25 majors. Remember too that Jones won his 7 in half the years that Hagen took to win his 11 titles. Hagen took 16 years but still was a hard drive data retrieval player. Hagen and of course Hogan would have golf clubs made after them. Hogan was also to become known as a brilliant club maker.

Ben Hogan from 1946 to 1953 won 9 majors. Who will ever know what this most prolific ball striker in the history of The PGA would have accomplished? Keep in mind his legs were crushed and he was told he may never walk again! Hogan had some very formidable foes who knew a thing or two about golf. Led by Sam Snead with 7 majors and Byron Nelson with 5. Nelson would only hostgator coupon code 9 years before calling it quits for a farm, which was his dream. Bobby Locke won 4 majors and many consider him to be the greatest putter who ever lived. (Locke coined the phrase. "Drive for show but putt for dough") Here we have a total of 16 majors verse Ben Hogan.
